Chat apps are where customers and teams already are. See how n8n connects to Telegram and WhatsApp, and what to set up on the server.
Telegram and WhatsApp are popular channels for alerts, support and simple chatbots. n8n has nodes for both. The hard part on a self-hosted server is usually not the workflow, it is getting a public HTTPS webhook URL working.
WEBHOOK_URL set to your public address. See the environment variables guide.Telegram only sends events to HTTPS URLs with a valid certificate, so if nothing arrives, check HTTPS, DNS and WEBHOOK_URL. Our webhook troubleshooting guide lists the common causes.
WhatsApp automation normally uses the official WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) from Meta. You need a Meta business account, a phone number set up for the API and approved message templates for messages that start a conversation. In n8n you use the WhatsApp Business Cloud nodes and a webhook that Meta calls with incoming messages. Rules and pricing are set by Meta and can change, so read their current documentation.
For more starter automations, see 10 n8n workflows every startup should automate. For safe hosting, see the n8n security checklist.
A managed n8n server comes with HTTPS and a stable address for Telegram and WhatsApp webhooks.
